In traditional Oriental medicine, facialrejuvenation is achieved by inserting acupuncture needles at different points along designated channels to attain tonification or sedation effects. According to the author, treatment benefits include elimination of some wrinkles and decrease in length and depth of others, decrease of facial edema, decrease of acne, improvement of facial muscle tone, improved skin texture with tighter pores, and decrease of sagging around the eyes, cheeks, chin, and neck.

In a multicenter, randomized control study involving 439 patients with Bell’s palsy, combined treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion was found to exert definite therapeutic effects. The subjects were randomized to one of three groups – a control group, receiving treatment with prednisone, vitamin B1, vitamin B12, and dibazol, an acu-moxibustion group, receiving acupuncture treatment with filiform needles and moxibustion treatment, or a combined treatment group, receiving both control group and acu-moxibustion group treatments, for a period of 4 weeks. Response to treatment was evaluated according to symptoms and signs, and the House-Brackmann grading scale and facial disability indexes. Patients in the combined treatment and acu-moxibustion treatment groups responded more favorably to treatment than patients in the control treatment group, with patients benefiting the most from the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment. Thus, this study suggests that in patients with Bell’s palsy, treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion may exert clinical therapeutic effects.
